Five new members admitted to the Swiss Young Academy

The Members’ Assembly of the Swiss Young Academy (SYA) has elected five new members. The new members were able to convince the Election Committee with their interest in promoting the dialogue between science and society and with their ideas for shaping the science system. The scientists and scholars newly-admitted to the Young Academy, together with the other 39 members, will be able to implement these ideas in inter- and transdisciplinary projects over the next five years.

How science scores points with politicians

How do scientific insights find their way into parliament? Researchers in Switzerland often do not have a clear answer to this question. A new publication by the Swiss Young Academy provides practical tips, insights and background information on the legislative process. This orientation guide is intended to enable (young) scientists to successfully contribute their knowledge to parliamentary deliberations.
Five new members for the Swiss Young Academy

On 1 May 2023 the Board of Directors of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences elected five new members to the Swiss Young Academy (SYA). With this election, the Academies acknowledge the ideas and commitment of the newly-elected members at the interfaces between science, society and politics. The newly-admitted scientists and academics will be able to implement innovative, inter- and transdisciplinary project ideas over the next five years jointly with the other 34 members.

Swiss Young Academy elects a new Executive Board and speaker

The members of the Swiss Young Academy elected their new Executive Board on 10 June 2022. Florian Egli was also appointed as the new speaker. In his one-year term of office, Florian Egli will be keen to provide a platform for fresh minds from science with new ideas. Mey Boukenna will be the new vice-speaker. Furthermore Lucas Mueller’s great commitment as the previous speaker of the Swiss Young Academy was acknowledged.

The newly-admitted members convinced with their research, experience of inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation and their motivation to work at the interface of science, society and politics. They will be able to implement their project ideas over the next five years jointly with the other 29 members.

New Executive Board of the Swiss Young Academy elected

The members of the Swiss Young Academy elected its Executive Board at their General Meeting and, with Lucas Mueller, their new speaker. In his one-year term of office, Lucas Mueller would like to devote his time to two urgent issues: the relationship between politics and science and how to improve precarious working conditions and inequality in academic institutions in Switzerland. In addition, Estefania Cuero’s commitment as the first speaker of the Swiss Young Academy was acknowledged.

During her one-year term of office, Estefania Cuero would above all like to work to meet the needs of society and young scientists. A particular concern of hers is diversity and inclusion.

They are characterized by their personal profile, their motivation and their great interest in inter- and transdisciplinary cooperation. For five years, they will represent young scientists in Switzerland and will help to shape the newly-founded Swiss Young Academy.

Establishment of the Swiss Young Academy

The Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences are establishing the Swiss Young Academy and, in doing so, becoming part of a successful global network. The Swiss Young Academy offers young researchers the opportunity to carry out inter- and transdisciplinary projects. Its first-ever call for members begins in mid-December 2019 and lasts until the end of January 2020.
